A new Film Festival Yearbook is in the making: edited by Alex Marlow-Mann (our previous editorial assistant) Archival Film Festivals will soon be with us.

Most people associate film festivals with premieres and the dissemination of the latest trends in cinema. However, the past three decades has also seen the rise of festivals dedicated to re-presenting cinema’s past through restorations, retrospectives and rediscoveries. This anthology is the first to chart the development of this phenomenon, while also considering such key issues as: the relationship between archives and festivals, the role of live music and the event screening, canon formation and the impact of digital technologies. Featuring writings by Paolo Cherchi Usai, Ian Christie, David Robinson and Aaron Gerow, interviews with Tom Luddy and Nick Varley, and chapters by festival specialists and scholars, Archival Film Festivals contains a dozen case studies from around the globe, five interviews with festival directors, programmers and distributors, a themed bibliography and a table of archival film festivals from around the world.

The first study of its kind, Alex Fischer's Sustainable Projections bases his new theory of film festival management on field-defining theories, interviews with practitioners as well as his own experiences.

Ever seen a dead film festival? It’s not a pretty sight. The economic climate of the past five years has marked a major fear of extinction for film festivals worldwide. As budgets tighten, film festival organisers are faced with difficult managerial decisions. Whether it is rethinking niche programming or seeking new funding streams, the action taken to keep from falling behind today will have repercussions well into the future.

Sustainable Projections: Concepts in Film Festival Management digs deep into the precarious, intuitive business of film festival organisation. Alex Fischer pours this often-chaotic business into an adapted framework of the Open Systems Theory, so that it becomes possible to think about festivals in more pragmatic terms. This book is not intended to be a ‘how to’ guide or a DIY manual, but rather a resource that strives to present film festival operation in a manner that makes it clear, concise and understandable, and in a way that can contribute to an event’s sustainability.

The first study of its kind, Alex Fischer’s Sustainable Projections bases his new theory of film festival management on field-defining theories, interviews with practitioners as well as his own experiences. He realistically portrays the ups and downs, as well as the struggles and rewards of film festival management, as he suggests a flexible framework within which to work and research. In so doing, he opens up a fresh angle on economic, political and social aspects in film festivals, useful for all those involved in, attracted by and enjoying film festivals.

The Film Festival Yearbooks Series has been going since 2009, when The Festival Circuit appeared.

General Editor: Dina Iordanova

Advisory Board: Dudley Andrew, Alberto Elena Diaz, Jean-Michel Frodon, Faye Ginsburg, Andrew Higson, Adrian Martin, Richard Porton, B. Ruby Rich

The Film Festival Yearbooks Series has been going since 2009, when The Festival Circuit appeared. This book was edited by Dina Iordanova and Ragan Rhyne and became a field-defining, often quoted and successful first study of film festivals in the academic world. It was soon followed by a second yearbook, dedicated to Imagined Communities in 2010, in which the festival and its communities are taken into consideration. The third book, edited by Dina Iordanova and Ruby Cheung, about Film Festivals in Asia, from 2011, is still an influential study of the grand, the unusual and the world famous festivals of the largest region in the world. The fourth yearbook from 2012, devoted to Film Festivals and Activism, was edited by Dina Iordanova and Leshu Torchin, an expert in activism and documentary. It is the first of its kind and boasts new definitions and a dialogue about activism and what festivals and films can achieve in a human rights context.

The next two yearbooks have been planned – Archival Film Festivals, edited by Alex Marlow-Mann, is currently being proofread and produced and will (we hope) be out by May 2013. After that, we have tentative plans for a yearbook on Festivals and the Middle East.

Dina Iordanova continues to be the general editor of this series, and it is supported by a solid advisory board that consists of film festival professionals and academics in the field. St Andrews Film Studies continues to lead the field of film festival studies, a relatively new but already very important new addition to film studies globally.

A new series, edited by Dina Iordanova, will seek to capture the dynamics of global film festivals. It will be comprehensive in its geographical coverage, with examples not only from the West but also stretching as far as Latin America and Africa and acknowledging the key importance of Asia.

Series Editor: Dina Iordanova

Advisory Board: Chris Berry (London), Mark Cousins (Edinburgh), Marijke de Valck (Amsterdam), James English (Philadelphia), Jean-Michel Frodon (Paris), Lee Yong-kwan (Busan), Richard Porton (New York).

Films need festivals: All films seek exposure and, for many films, festivals are among the few available platforms that give such exposure. Yet, the festival circuit is a platform that is insufficiently explored and remains poorly understood.

Festivals need films: Having come into existence once, film festivals have an insatiable need for new content. Festivals depend on films for their own survival, threading the fine line between opulence and obscurity.

Work published in this series will improve the understanding of the way film travels through the festival circuit. It seeks to highlight and untangle the dialectics of the two. Conceptually, the project is based on notions of transnationalism and dialogism. It will pay attention to peripheral yet significant phenomena and will bring about new insights by breaking down the concept of a single festival circuit into many smaller self-contained yet interlocking clusters.

The series will seek to capture the dynamics of global film festivals. It will be comprehensive in its geographical coverage, with examples not only from the West but also stretching as far as Latin America and Africa and acknowledging the key importance of Asia. It will seek to analyze the reasons for the proliferation of film festivals in some cultural contexts as opposed to their restrained advancement in others. It will seek to show the range of stakeholders and forces that shape the film festival in relationship to tourism, cultural diplomacy or various activist causes. It will explore management and political aspects and the so-called economies of prestige. Last but not least, it will explore the relentless invasion of the digital forms of distribution and how they change the game.
